The Blackwood Basin, as a whole, has a population of just over 37,000 people (2004). With much of the lower Blackwood Basin being within conservation estate, only approximately 30% of the area is cleared and used for a mix of urban and rural land-uses. The only settlements in the area is Augusta on the coast and Nannup inland and upstream along the Blackwood River.
It is estimated from the 2011 Census, that the Lower Blackwood population is around 3,295 people. The median age is high, being between 47 and 53 years for the localities listed below (ABS 2011).
The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River is forecast to grow to be 17,200 by 2026 (increasing from 11,761 in 2011) while the Shire of Nannup is forecast to reduce in population to 1,100 in 2026 (WAPC 2012).
