The Blackwood Basin, as a whole, has a population of just over 37,000 people (2004). Approximately 26% of the middle Basin is designated State Forest or conservation estate. Approximately 60% of the area is cleared and used for predominantly rural land-uses. The only settlements in the area is Bridgetown, Greenbushes and Boyup Brook.
It is estimated from the 2011 Census, that the Middle Blackwood population is around 6,902 people. The median age is high, being between 45 and 55 years for the Shires / localities listed below (ABS 2011).
The Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup is forecast to grow to be 6,300 by 2026 (increasing from 5,320 in 2011). Balingup and Mullalyup would be expected to experience only minor portions of this growth, with Donnybrook experiencing the majority of it. The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes is forecast to grow in population to 5,600 in 2026 and the Shire of Boyup Brook to 1,900 in 2026 (WAPC, 2012).
