The diversity of natural environments within the Peel-Harvey system results in the presence of unique plants and animals. A number of protected migratory and shore birds frequent the area and due to the pressures of the system, there is also a number of threatened species known to the area.

The Peel-Harvey system strongly identifies itself with its natural waterways (rivers, wetlands, creeks and the estuary), its riparian and coastal bushland and samphire flats.
